You may be asking yourself, “what is the purpose of this salute Anthony?” I am so glad you asked that frees me up to give you the answer. I am fully aware and know what Xavier has meant to me as both a student and an employee – a family community. Within the walls of Xavier bleeds an education that money cannot buy nor of which can any company or business place a price tag. Xavier has attracted students, like me, from all across the globe (i.e. Virgin Islands, California, Texas, Washington, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Michigan, etc.). Within that attraction came about a sense of family and community that flowed from the esteemed President Francis, all the way down to the distinguished faculty and staff. Regardless of whether students stayed a semester, a full year, or the entire four or six year term, they will never forget the impact that Xavier has had on their lives academically, mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally. During the Hurricane evacuation, students were blessed with the opportunity to attend other schools to keep their academic lives active. After attending the various schools and returning to Xavier in January, students made the most amazing discovery – there is no place like Xavier. Although this was not a shock to some students, it was a true awakening for most. It was this awakening that students realized the level of depth and intensity of a Xavier education. Students found themselves in those temporary classrooms saying: “Oh, we already did this in Biology Lab”, “Are you serious? We are so passed this.” With all of the evidence provided above, it is clear that giving back to Xavier is still in style and in high demand. Therefore, I implore you to consider giving back to Xavier University of Louisiana, not just because I am using these fancy words, examples, and anecdotes, but because the up and coming generations need your continued support and encouragement. Please show them through your contribution that you want them to experience the same family community that myself, my peers, and YOU have experienced. It is through this family community that has contributed to helping us excel, develop, mature, and propel into men and women of God who are on a mission to create a more just and human society for all. I hope that this response has effectively answered the question you asked me earlier. It is my prayer that you will deeply consider contributing, and continue to support the mission of the village that helped raise both me and my fellow Xavierites – “With God on our side, there is nothing to fear.” Sincerely, Anthony D. Sharp, Jr. Xavier University of Louisiana Active Alumnus, Classes of 2003 and 2006

September 2001 – May 2002 Research Assistant The Black Sheep Effect in African Americans Xavier University of Louisiana Principal Investigator: Elliott D. Hammer, Ph.D. Description: Despite solid evidence of the black sheep effect---the tendency for perceivers to view an under-performing in-group member less favorably than out-group members---the circumstances under which this phenomenon occurs are less well understood. Minority group members may be especially susceptible to the effect because the in-group member’s failure not only reflects poorly upon the group, but also in some cases threatens to reinforce negative stereotypes. In this study, African American participants read about a White or Black target who had failed or succeeded in either academic or an athletic domain. They then rated the target on a number of characteristics and reported attributions for his outcome. Analyses indicated that participants made more internal attributions for the White target’s (i.e. out-group member’s) failures in either domain. Participants were more interested in meeting the Black target when he succeeded in the academic domain than when he succeeded in sports.
